BLNR Homeless Updates

The Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) received an update on homeless efforts by the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) at its recent meeting on October 23, 2020.

DLNR highlighted the department’s efforts to provide over-70 acres of land for new homeless programs – such as Hale Hanakahi, Kealaula, Kahauiki, Kukuiola, Kahauiki Village, Hale Mauliola, and the HONU/POST programs.   In addition, DLNR shared about outreach efforts to homeless individuals on its lands, mental health training for conservation officers, and the opening of DLNR restroom facilities during the pandemic.

Administrators from the Land, State Parks,  Boating & Ocean Recreation, Forestry and Wildlife, and Conservation and Resource Enforcement also shared about management challenges, including fires, criminal activity, and increase costs for trash removal and facility repairs.
